The worldwide economic recession that started two years ago has been generally recoveringsince 2009. This trend is remarkable in Asia and China; Japan is also showing signs ofrecovery. Meanwhile, this July, various areas in Japan experienced localized torrential rain like squalls normally seen in the tropical zone, which caused serious damage to people and crops.
It seems that the seasonal cycle in Japan is becoming more unusual year by year.
At the United Nations Summit on Climate Change held in September last year, the Japanese government announced to the world that “By 2020, Japan would reduce greenhouse gases by 25% compared to the 1990 level.”
This reduction target is more demanding than the last one of 8%. Achieving the target is a difficult task that cannot be accomplished by existing energy-saving measures; therefore, I feel the need to make new efforts including the Revised Rationalization in Energy Use Law that has been implemented from this fiscal year by each company, and the CO2 Emissions Trading System (Cap & Trade).
Further, in the product market environment, demands for environmental harmony of products are becoming more and more urgent, as seen in Europe’s restriction of chemicals including the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and the REACH (Regulation Concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals), China’s restriction equivalent to the RoHS, and Japan’s revisions of the PRTR (Pollutant Release and Transfer Register) and the Act on the Evaluation of Chemical Substances and Regulation of Their Manufacture, etc., and the resource problem of tungsten, the material for cemented carbide. In order to properly respond to these situations, it is indispensible to introduce overall environmental conservation measures ranging from procurement to development, manufacturing, sales and recycling.
Tungaloy acquired the ISO14001 certification in 1997 for the first time in the carbide tool manufacturing industry in Japan, and this year marks the 14th anniversary. Currently, under the Tungaloy Group’s environmental policy, we have been promoting environmental conservation activities within the Group which comprises business and sales offices at home, and affiliated companies both at home and overseas.
As we consider environmental conservation activities to be one of the most important tasks in our management, the Tungaloy Group will continue to make positive efforts to reduce the environmental burden.
Last, but not least, we would like to work more actively to manufacture products that are safe for our customers and produce less environmental burden.
This report outlines these activities. Your kind understanding, support, and honest opinion would be very much appreciated.
