Iwaki / Japan, 16. January 2012 - For the turning of small diameter components, the Tungaloy Corporation has now launched its new range of “TinyTurn” solid carbide boring bars. Developed for the general machining market, the new TinyTurn series is suitable for the high precision internal turning operations on small diameter components with a minimum internal diameter from 0.6mm.

With a PVD coating and an extremely tough substrate, the TinyTurn can deliver remarkable tool life with outstanding edge sharpness and smoothness for the small and precision internal machining. This new series from Tungaloy is ideal for boring, profiling, threading and grooving operations on a vast array of materials that include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium and titanium alloys.

The solid boring bars are available in a number of designations to meet the demands of the end user. For boring, profiling and chamfering, the JBT range is available with a 4 or 7mm shank that offers internal turning diameters that include 0.6, 1, 2, 2.8, 4, 5, 6, 6.8 and 7mm. With a corner radius from 0.04 to 0.15mm, the JBT is ideal for intricate internal turning operations.

For boring and chamfering, Tungaloy has developed the JBP geometry that is capable of turning to a minimum bore diameter of 2.8mm while the JBU range for back boring and chamfering is suitable for internal diameters from 5mm upwards. To conduct boring and 45 degree chamfering, the JBC series with a shank diameter of 7mm and overall length of 35mm has been developed while the JBB range has been established purely for back boring.

For face grooving processes, Tungaloy has created the JBF and JBS geometries. The JBF series is available with groove widths from 1 to 3mm in 0.5mm increments with a groove length from 1.5 to 30mm whereas the JBS that is more specific for shaft machining and has a groove width and length of 2mm and 4mm respectively.

To conduct internal grooving, the JBG is the tool of choice. It offers groove widths that include 0.5, 0.7, 1, 1.5 and 2mm for a minimum bore diameter from 2 to 6.8mm. Alongside the JBG, the JBR series is the full radius boring and profiling tools with 1mm grooving width.

To complete the diverse series, Tungaloy has developed its JBI geometry for metric threading. With a pitch from 0.5 to 1.5mm in 0.25mm increments with a flank length from 0.3 to 0.8mm and a maximum turning depth of 14mm, the JBI is the suitable choice for most thread machining applications.

The precision ground solid carbide shanks synchronise with the TinyTurn JBBS sleeves. The sleeves are double ported with a 4mm and 7mm precision hole at each end that corresponds with the two available diameters of the solid carbide cutting tools. The 4 and 7mm sleeve hole configuration provides exact positioning with exceptional stability and reliability in tool changeovers. With clamping screws angled at 45 degrees, the sleeves can suit all types of tooling configurations.

All tool geometries are available with a multitude of options that includes various turning lengths, groove widths, radii, minimum bore diameters and the option of right or left hand tools. This exceptional flexibility is extended to the sleeves that offer a selection of lengths and diameters. The possibilities for this exciting new TinyTurn series delivers 146 solid carbide tools with 10 sleeve variations to ensure that Tungaloy can meet the diverse demands of the marketplace.

The new TinyTurn system offers internal through coolant that enhances chip evacuation, even at the smallest of diameters. Additionally, the series incorporates a chipbreaker that reduces the cutting forces and further improves chip control. This combination improves tool life and surface finishes while the new PVD coated SH730 grade carbide tool ensures cutter life and performance are far beyond that of competitor products.
